5 Minutes with Walker Smith Global

Matt Tyson, Group Managing Director, Walker Smith Global

Tell us a bit about your background before Walker Smith?

I started my career in banking before, in 2006 I joined a company called PayStream as part of their senior management team. I enjoyed 4 successful years there, helping the business not only become a market leader in the payroll services space but also to manage the impact of significant Legislative changes.

I used this experience to set up Pinnacle in 2010 which I grew to over 3,000 contractors within 4 years and successfully sold to trade.

I went on to raise venture capital from Hamilton Bradshaw and established Walker Smith in 2014 with the aim of building a market-leading accounting and financial services group, with the contractor market at his heart.

What’s the most challenging part of your job?

We have several companies in our Group and also several offices around the UK. I have to ensure that I plan my time effectively to ensure that each part of the business gets the requisite amount of focus from me.

Who or what inspires you?

On a personal level I’m motivated by seeing people succeed and like nothing better than supporting others to achieve their goals, be it my colleagues or our customers. Over the years I have worked alongside some truly inspirational colleagues who have the ability to bring the very best out of their teams – I greatly admire people that are able to do that and constantly aspire to do the same.

What advice would you give to anybody wanting to enter into the same industry?

I would encourage anyone to consider a career in Accountancy and Payroll – numbers make the world go round! In all honesty, our industry is constantly changing and always customer focussed so I find it a really enjoyable and challenging environment to work.

My philosophy for running a business is to take the time to think about the values of your Company and then ensure every decision is taken in line with them – the rest will take care of itself.

When you’re not thinking about Walker Smith what are you doing?

Outside of work, I have a 4 year old son and 3 year old daughter who continue to amaze (and occasionally frustrate!) me every day. I am also sports mad and a keen supporter of Manchester City, who have had their moments in recent years.
